about

This is a challenging event. The runners, each attempting this challenge as a fund raising effort for the charity of their choice (for more on this click the “how to sponsor” link), will depart on the morning of July 1st, and have all 31 days of this long summer month to cover the 830 mile jog between Oakland, CA and Portland, OR. The course winds along the forever undulating pacific coast highways for most of journey, splitting time being shaded under giant redwood trees and exposed along the weather beaten coastal roads that parallel the Pacific Ocean. Finally, the course veers east for the final ninety miles. This section will be the most mountainous, as Portland sits just on the far side of the coastal mountain range. The runners must cover roughly 26 miles (a marathon) each day on average to reach Portland by July 31st.

There is a support team which will carry all of the runners camping gear, first aid, food, water, etc.

Matt and Brian, I wish you the best of luck on your run/jog up the coast. I solo-hiked the coast from Mexico through Canada last winter and spring and know the coast well. If you ever need any tips on places to stay, eat, visit, etc. feel free to email me.

I work at REI and met Matt when he came in a couple of days ago. He asked me if REI could somehow sponsor this event and unfortunately, because we're a Co-op, we don't have money to support worthy causes like this, but the store allows certain groups to set up a table out in front and I was thinking that you could perhaps ask if you might be able to have a table in the front of the store and raise money this way.
  • Matt Szymankowski
Thank you Toby. Your encouragement when I stopped into REI really felt good. I will look into the table out front idea. Thanks again.
