Unlike most “run for a cause” events, each participant in the Oakland to Portland challenge is running for the cause of their choice.  Each athlete gets a place on the website (www.oaklandtoportland.org) to tell about their reasons for running, and fundraises for their own cause. Donations, or sponsors, are given in one of two ways, a single donation or a per mile sponsor.  The per mile sponsor is preferred due to its motivational nature.  For example, should you want to support a participant you might sponsor them at a rate of 10 cents per mile.  Should he/she cover all 830 miles your donation would be $83.00.  But should they only make it 700 miles your donation would be $70.00.  All charitable donations are to be collected after the event.  80% of all funds go directly to the chosen cause, 20% towards event organization.

    Hi Matt,

I work with your brother, Tony. He has been keeping us updated on how you're doing. What a wonderful cause you're supporting. I'm a breast cancer survivor myself of 4 years. My family is doing the 5K Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Walk in August. However, that seems like small potatoes compared to what you and your friend are doing. I'd like to donate 5 cents per mile to your cause.

    Sincerely,

    Jodi Scruggs

I met Brian only a month ago but his story of the journey he was about to embark on stuck with me. I've been a professional advocate for a long time as a Union Organizer, but I'm really impressed by these guys doing something so personal & physically challenging as a way to advocate. Their trip is having a big impact.

    Madd Props!

Plus, after your success you should probably come east so that we can have a huge ticker tape parade...or at least a massive blow out, 'cuz you missed the BBQ! At least at this one you would be the guest of honor, and oh yeah, BOOM!
  • Reid Taylor
Brian, BOOM! Go to it man, BOOM! Just be careful and eat your oatmeal...BOOM!

Great effort! My kids went to John Muir Elementary School and the Outdoor School Program this year--it was a wonderful experience for them and for all of the kids. They cooked and hiked and made sculpture and saw deer and gophers and grew in many many ways. Mr Rutherford puts an incredible effort into this program and it is really very special. Thank you Brian for supporting this great program. And good luck to you too Matt.

    Hi Martha,

If we send out a pledge list for say 5 or 10 cents a mile, do you think you might be able to help organize some more sponsors?

    5 cents a mile ~ $42
    10 cents a mile ~ $83

Please let me know and I'll get it out...

    Thanks! -Elliot Jaramillo elliotj@comcast.net
